PALACE OF THE PRIORS representation of plebiscite

In memory of the plebiscite which ratified the annexation of Assisi to the Kingdom of Italy (4th November 1860), Alessandro Venanzi (Perugia 1838 – Assisi 1916) painted a large canvas with an allegory of Justice, a woman with a scale and a sword in her hand, sitting on a cart drawn by three lions and followed by rejoicing angels. Four angels lift up a flag with the coat of arms of Assisi. Two other small angels below put their vote into a ballot urn with the words “YES – NO”. A naked standard bearer holding a white flag opens the parade, and a flying girl dressed in green with a three-colored stripe (the Italian flag) and a writing “LIBERTAS” closes it.
